We are the Food Standards Agency, an independent Government department. It’s our job to use our expertise and influence so that people can trust that the food they buy and eat is safe and honest. Our work touches everyone in the country. We all eat. Here you can find out more about the strategic approaches that underpin our work.
The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland helps consumers choose where to eat out or shop for food by giving them information about the hygiene standards in restaurants, takeaways and food shops.
We, in partnership with local authorities, operate the FHRS in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the FHIS in Scotland. The schemes encourage businesses to improve hygiene standards. The overarching aim is to reduce the incidence of foodborne illness. The FHRS is now running in all areas of Wales and Northern Ireland and in 99% of England.
